Interesting idea about quitting. However, how do you differentiate a rough patch from actually wanting to quit? What if later on you regret your decision?

I would personally add fearing to regret the decision in the future to the list of things that make it hard to quit.

Journaling helps me with this. I take notes daily about how I feel, things I do, etc, and I typically revisit them weekly and quarterly. I do this to make sure there aren't trends that go unnoticed.

And when you notice a "rough patch", you can address it gradually. You can talk with your manager (several times) about how you feel. You can change things here and there yourself. You can seek advice from friends / peers. You can look around for other opportunities. In general, you can do everything you can can to have all the cards on the table to make an informed decision.

Does this make sense?

For me, feeling like quitting should persist for three to six months before acting on it. You can mark it on your calendar and try to revisit out of context, and see if you still feel the same.

I agree, as I wrote to Javier, journaling helps me with this. I take notes daily about how I feel, things I do, etc, and I typically revisit them weekly and quarterly. I do this to make sure there aren't trends that go unnoticed.
