Iβd say the biggest disagreement I have is regarding the power structures. As an IC moving to leadership and then back to IC - rinse and repeat- a couple of times, Iβd say main motivators at least for small to reasonable sized startups is to deliver as efficiently as possible.
Add into that ineptness, fear, struggle to communicate, lack of discipline and you end up with waterfall. Itβs always easier and more comforting to say a date and promise to keep it - regardless of overwhelming evidence to state it is a shitshow about to happen. People hear what they want to hear and they want something nice, and easy to understand message.
