Refactoring Community 💬

refactoring.fm

Hey everyone, this is a big day!

After beta-testing and teasing it for a couple of months, the new Refactoring Community is ready and I am launching it today 💥

This is a special email to tell you everything about it, why I believe you should join us, and how.

Let's start! 👇

💬 Why a Community?

The goal of Refactoring is to help people build great engineering teams.

If you are a technical leader who wants to create a motivated, high-performing team, a founder who wants to scale their company, or an engineer who wants to up their game, this is the place for you.

For more than a year I have written a new essay every week about some engineering topic I care about. Even though these essays include sizable research, they always present my own point of view.

This is a blessing and a curse.

The upside is you get practical advice that is anchored to real-world experience. The downside is, there is a ceiling to what I can genuinely write about, because there is a ceiling to my own experience.

The community is a natural extension to what Refactoring can provide, by allowing people to share and receive advice in a way that goes beyond what I am able to do on my own.

And it goes beyond advice, too. In the community you can meet brilliant peers and create valuable connections for your personal and professional life.

My vision for Refactoring is to become your engineering family — the trusted place and people you can always reach out to for anything you need.

Refactoring is your Engineering family

So what should you expect from it? 👇

✍️ Async Communication

I believe great conversations need the right time for reflection and the right space to express structured thoughts.

For this reason, the community focuses on written, async communication, where everyone can jump in at their own pace.

The community structure encourages async, thoughtful conversations.

It is built on Circle, a modern tool that favors thoughtful conversations over noisy, real time chats.

Whether you will be here every day or just check in when you have some time, the community is going to support you.

Every week you will receive an email digest with the best posts and comments written by community members, so it's easy to catch up if you missed something.

🔍 Quality

The community is exclusive to Refactoring premium members.

This is crucial to keeping the quality of interactions high, limiting spam, and making people more committed to participating.

If the subscription seems like a lot to you, my promise is that this is going to be very different from your average Slack or Discord channel. Think of a place where you can go, share whatever you are struggling with, and have folks with tens of years of experience reply with their best advice. It is already happening, and frankly it is amazing.

Subscription revenues also allow us to bring in special guests, domain experts, and organize all kinds of initiatives to make the community better.

🗓️ Events

Refactoring is as much about learning as it is about making friends and connections. You can expect regular events from the community, including:

  • 🏢 Office Hours — a weekly call with me and others where you can jump in, discuss the latest Refactoring article, or any other topic we can help you with.

  • 📣 Community Talks — talks organized by community members around specific topics.

  • 🏅 Special Guests — interviews and AMAs with incredible external guests.

Events are seamlessly integrated in the platform and can be easily added to your calendar 👇

Each event also leads to further discussion — people can leave comments, ideas, and I always write a recap about the most relevant insights 👇

➡️ How to join

Premium members will find a link to a survey below.

The purpose of the survey is to understand what your interests and goals are, how you like to help and talk with others, and what you think a great community looks like.

I take building this space very seriously. To make it an amazing place, I prioritize people who are excited to be a part of it, open to learning from others, and generous in offering their own skills and wisdom.

If you are not a premium member yet, consider joining below! You will receive a welcome email with a link to the survey, and all the instructions to access the other premium content, like the new Refactoring Library.

If you are already a premium member, instead, just continue reading below!
