Survey: how do you use AI at work? ๐ณ๏ธ (win $150!)
We need your help to create a big industry report!
๐ TL;DR โ we are working on a big industry report ๐ณ๏ธ about how engineers and teams use AI at work, and how they feel about it.
We need your help to figure this out! ๐
Your answers will shape our findings and the best insights will be quoted in the final report.
We are also giving away 20 paid memberships for free ($150 each!) ๐ to people who answer the survey! We will draw the winners next month as soon as the survey closes.
AI is everywhere these days, but itโs unclear how much it is truly impacting the work of real-world engineering teams.
Most reporting โ like Microsoft saying that 30% of their code is written by AI, or Google saying itโs 50% โ focuses on usage rather than outcome, and doesnโt say whether things are ultimately better than before or not.
How much time are engineers truly saving? Do they enjoy using AI? How does the adoption process work in a team?
Also, the SDLC is a pipeline where a lot of stuff happens other than pure coding. How is AI helping with that? What about documentation, code reviews, CI/CD, or QA?
I believe that, for AI to keep its promise, we need to have a more holistic conversation about it, that 1) covers all the steps of the pipeline, and 2) focuses on the value that is actually created.
Now, since Refactoring has now a big community of readers, I feel like we can do our part to see through the fog, so we are publishing a thorough survey to learn how engineers and teams are using AI today.
It wonโt focus on lines of code, but rather on the big picture of how AI is helping (or not) across the whole development lifecycle. What people are using it for, whether they are enjoying it, what kind of impact they are seeing, and what they think is coming next.
More specifically, there are three angles we want to explore:
๐โโ๏ธ Personal usage โ how engineers use AI and how they feel about it. Is making them save time? Do they enjoy work more? Or less?
๐ฝ Team usage โ how AI is used at a team level. What's the impact on the various stages of SDLC? And what the adoption process looks like?
๐ผ Skills & job market โ how is AI changing hiring, headcount, and the skills required of engineers? How you think it is going to?
So, the goal of this survey is two-fold:
We want to capture the reality of things today. See through the hype and learn what is really happening.
We want to know how engineers think about this moment in time, whether they are more optimistic or pessimistic about their work, and what changes they see happening down the line (if any).
We are partnering with Augment ๐ช
This is an ambitious work that will take several months, so we are not doing this alone.
To scope and shape the survey we have been working with Augment โ one of the worldโs most loved AI coding platforms. Augment is used by thousands of orgs big and small, I have known the team for a long time, and they are a long-time partner of Refactoring.
Here is the survey! ๐ณ๏ธ
So, today we are launching the survey on the newsletter and the community, and the results will be published on Refactoring.
It will be a deep industry report, with hundreds of contributions, including both hard numbers and quotes and stories from tech leaders all around the world.
