Hustling, remote culture, and personal space 🧘

Interview with Jean Hsu • VP of Engineering at Range and writer of Tech & Tea.

Last week I had a fantastic chat with

, who is VP of Engineering at Range, and writer of the popular newsletter Tech and Tea.

Jean has been an obvious inspiration for me, for a long time. Her focus on improving how people work in tech shows in everything she does:

  • She builds a product that improves the way teams communicate.

  • She writes a newsletter about—in her own words—leadership, teamwork, parenting, partnership, and creative self-expression.

  • She runs leadership training for engineers, and has interviewed some of the most successful leaders in tech.

Our conversation naturally gravitated towards those topics. Today’s article is a summary of our conversation, plus more ideas and resources to learn more. Here is what we will cover:

  • ⚖️ Hardcore vs Calm work — an increasingly big divide in tech.

  • 🏃‍♂️ Engineering productivity — it’s not about the hours.

  • 💻 Remote productivity — getting things done vs building relationships.

  • 🧠 Hustling and mindset — our need to feel productive, goal setting, and over-achieving.

  • 🧘 The hierarchy of spaces — carving out space for living your life and, eventually, express yourself creatively.

Let’s dive in!
