I've experienced both these extremes and do feel a sense of loss at jettisoning some of the practical parts of the job. I wouldn't go back but as someone who's fantasized about building a single cycle processor out of wire wrapped components, like a mainframe lol, in my garage, there is some nostalgia for the puzzle solving aspect.

Hand coding becomes a hobby, like woodworking.

Great point about the puzzle versus problem analogy. I've also heard it expressed at: You wouldn't bring a forklift to the gym; but you wouldn't manually handle heavy pallets, either.
